The Need for Black and Brown Scholars Financial Capacity Building

In today's digital financial world, black and brown scholars and their families are faced with adjusting to the effects of inflation and the toll it takes on family spending. Families are dealing with decreased buying power and a dependency on credit.

With the emergence of financial technology (FinTech) financial management is now done through online apps installed on smartphones and tablets. While traditional financial services may be more accessible through technology, the skill of responsible financial management is still rooted in behavior. Through our Black and Brown Scholars Financial Capacity Building program, we will work on establishing financial behaviors and empowering Scholars with knowledge and personal financial education.

Why We Think this is Important

  • Most families never get professional-grade financial education or guidance.
  • Many families working through financial challenges don't feel the confidence to teach their children about money.
  • Schools rarely teach money management.

What We Intend to Do

Throughout the school year, we will host a series of sessions that will focus on helping the scholars to develop a strong commitment to becoming and staying financially capable. We will do this through the delivery of 45-minute my Money, my Future empowerment sessions.

We will rotate the following topics throughout the year and work with the scholars to gain age-appropriate proficiency in each of these areas:

  • Future Self
  • Asset Creation
  • Banking Access
  • Credit Education
  • Debt Management
  • Income Generation
  • Saving Habits
